Description Dr. Werner Fink 2015-01-22 14:58:05 UTC
In the journal there is a warning about ntp

ntpd[1728]: *** WARNING *** The program 'ntpd' uses the Apple Bonjour compatibility layer of Avahi.
ntpd[1728]: *** WARNING *** Please fix your application to use the native API of Avahi!
ntpd[1728]: *** WARNING *** For more information see <http://0pointer.de/avahi-compat?s=libdns_sd&e=ntpd>

the corrected link is http://0pointer.net/blog/projects/avahi-compat.html
Comment 1 Dominique Leuenberger 2015-01-22 15:15:48 UTC
if NTP is using the wrong API, the NTP has to fix it => assigning to NTP maintainer
Comment 2 Martin Pluskal 2015-01-22 15:27:52 UTC
If I understand correctly, issue here is not that ntp is using wrong API (actually only legacy), but that warning in regard of its usage contains not working url - http://0pointer.de/avahi-compat?s=libdns_sd&e=ntpd.
Comment 3 Dominique Leuenberger 2015-01-22 15:34:16 UTC
oh! ok, I can surely fix avahi to give a correct URL - but wouldn't it be even better if we would not spit out the warning ? :)
Comment 4 Martin Pluskal 2015-01-22 15:36:23 UTC
I believe that this is targeted for next release of ntp (4.2.8).
Comment 5 Dominique Leuenberger 2015-01-22 15:37:16 UTC
(btw: the reason for the 'wrong' URL is simply that since 2005, when this compat layer was introduced, there was supposedly enough time for packages to no longer to use the compat lib and the specific info given on the script there has been removed; only the blog post from 2005 is left available)
Comment 6 Dr. Werner Fink 2015-01-22 15:43:21 UTC

Hmmm ... I meant the usage of an depricated protocol ... the wrong link is na other story

so my first thought of assigning this to the ntp maintainer was the correct one... reassigning again (in the meantime I have a patch for avahi that changes the address to the blog entry)

It's just a warning.
