is this i586??

It is a 32 bit CPU. I am not sure if it can be classified as i586 in particular. Could you please have a look at the attached /proc/cpuinfo and tell me if you need any other info?

Are you using kernel-default instead of kernel-pae for some reason?

Your /proc/cpuinfo shows that your CPU supports PAE.
